Get the job, do the job, keep the job – that was the mantra behind this year’s Casuarina program: Titled Future Ambitions. The program developed job-readiness skills for young people in the Surf Coast. The 40 students who completed the program celebrated with a graduation ceremony at Surf Coast Secondary College in September.
The program drew on the entrepreneurial spirit that exists in Surf Coast and many local business operators gave generously of their time.
The opening stage featured mock interviews with 110 local students in May, supporting them to gain valuable experience in interview situations. Forty students progressed to training and placements in July and August, learning on-the-job training at successful local businesses Ocean Grind Coffee, Zeally Bay Sourdough and clothing brand Okki.
Surf Coast Secondary College Principal Scott Diamond said Future Ambitions provided students with opportunities to gain experience in local workplaces with engaged business leaders.
“The opportunities for our students to be part of something they create as their future workplace is very real, and we are fortunate to have so many talented examples of that on our doorstep. “The students have learnt that it’s possible to build a career around an aspect of your life that you are passionate about.”
Mr Diamond said the graduates finished the program with a strong business network, and were exposed to people who have the skills needed to be successful.
These young people are our future, and we hope that some of them are eager to achieve their dreams in the Surf Coast and add to our vibrant community, like their mentors have done.
Casuarina has been running for more than 12 years, focusing on building peoples’ strength, resilience and growth. Future Ambitions follows last year’s successful Environmental Leaders intake, with four of the 10 graduates establishing local businesses.
